how to use persuasion

Is adoption of new technology important to you and your organisation? Are you challenged by the introduction of complex and novel technologies?

Why is it that even when the case for adoption seems obvious it is not uncommon for us to be disappointed with the uptake?

The decision to adopt (or not to adopt) a new idea or practice is both a rational one and an emotional one. This workshop develops practical skills that ensure both rational and emotional channels are adequately addressed in adoption activities.

Researchers, extension officers and increasingly agribusiness agronomists are the vital link between research findings and adoption. The workshops recognises the unique contribution of each group and the role they must play in developing and delivering technology that is ‘adoption ready’.

Successful adoption requires skillful use of persuasion techniques to influence decisions and achieve a commitment to act on them. When these techniques are built into your extension and adoption programs you can be confident about increasing the uptake of new ideas.

The workshop is practical

The workshop has a very clear objective to provide participants with the opportunity to practice the skills needed for technology adoption to occur.  It is about action and doing more than knowing.  So, by the end of the workshop we expect participants to be able to do the following:

  • Package a concept for adoption, which includes:
    • knowing the target audience
    • setting appropriate adoption goals
    • demonstrating a comprehensive knowledge of the concept
    • avoiding complexity
  • Engage clients for adoption, which requires
    • listening to and understanding the client
    • uncovering issues and reaching a common understanding of them
    • establishing credibility, confidence and trust
  • Practice persuasion skills, which involves
    • identifying six key persuasion channels
    • using persuasion channels that are matched to clients
    • constructing a platform for adoption through persuasion
  • Secure a commitment to act, which includes
    • identifying and overcoming barriers
    • achieving sustainable change in attitudes
    • creating an action plan that demonstrates implementation of the concept

Who should attend this workshop?

  • Extension Officers involved in the introduction of new concepts for agriculture, horticulture or NRM
  • Agronomists with commercial responsibilities to develop new practices with their clients
  • Researchers who need to play a key role in driving the adoption of their research outcomes
  • Adoption Managers seeking to achieve increased uptake of new technology
